Malawi Hosts Soybean Brown Field Day to Showcase TAAT Technologies and Boost Value Addition

The Soybean Compact of Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT), in collaboration with national and regional partners, is set to host an On-site Soybean Processing and Brown Field Day in Malawi to demonstrate innovative technologies that enhance productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve nutrition.

Scheduled for 22–24 April 2026 at Kapaladzala Extension Planning Area (EPA), Lisandwa in Kasungu District, the three-day event will bring together farmers, agribusinesses, policymakers, researchers, and development partners for hands-on learning and knowledge exchange.

Showcasing Innovation from Field to Processing

Since December 2025, the TAAT Soybean Compact (working through its national partner, the Department of Agricultural Services under the Ministry of Agriculture) has established soybean demonstration plots across Malawi to promote improved technologies and best agronomic practices.

These demonstration fields have now reached maturity, providing a unique opportunity to showcase real-time results. The selected site in Kasungu District features 24 sentinel plots (10m x 10m each), with varying treatments designed to demonstrate the performance of different soybean production technologies.

The Brown Field Day will focus on live harvesting and on-site processing, offering participants a practical understanding of how to maximise productivity and reduce losses along the value chain.

Unlocking Nutrition and Agribusiness Opportunities

Under the theme “Unlocking TAAT Soybean Production and Processing Technologies for Improved Human and Animal Nutrition,” the event will highlight how soybean can drive both nutrition security and economic growth.

Participants will witness harvesting of mature soybean fields using improved practices, on-site processing into products for human consumption and animal feed, demonstrations on reducing post-harvest losses, and practical agribusiness models for scaling soybean production and processing.

The event will also showcase how value addition can transform soybean from a raw commodity into diverse, market-ready products, increasing income opportunities for farmers and agripreneurs.

Bringing Stakeholders Together

The Brown Field Day will convene a wide range of stakeholders, including farmer cooperatives and smallholder producers, agribusiness SMEs and aggregators, Soybean processors and feed industry players, extension agents and researchers, government officials and development partners.

This multi-stakeholder engagement is designed to strengthen collaboration across the soybean value chain and accelerate the adoption of TAAT technologies.

Driving Impact Through Partnerships

The initiative is supported by key partners, including the Department of Agricultural Services of the Malawian Ministry of Agriculture, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the Government of Malawi.

Together, these partners are working to ensure that farmers and value chain actors have access to the tools, knowledge, and innovations needed to succeed.

Empowering Farmers, Strengthening Food Systems

By combining field demonstrations with practical processing sessions, the event underscores TAAT’s commitment to delivering end-to-end solutions (from production to value addition).

The expected outcomes include increased adoption of improved soybean technologies, reduced post-harvest losses, enhanced productivity and profitability

Improved human and animal nutrition, and stronger linkages across the soybean value chain

As Malawi continues to prioritise agricultural transformation, soybean is emerging as a strategic crop with the potential to drive food security, nutrition, and economic development.

The Brown Field Day represents a critical step in translating innovation into impact (ensuring that farmers not only grow more, but also process more, earn more, and nourish more).
