TAAT Hosts Training of Trainers Workshop on Aquaculture Technologies in Benin

Aquaculture in the Republic of Benin is gaining momentum as a vital sector for food security, nutrition, and livelihoods. With abundant aquatic resources, including lagoons, rivers, and coastal waters, the country has strong potential to expand fish farming. Yet, local production remains limited, and Benin continues to rely heavily on imports to meet demand.
To address these challenges, the TAAT Fish Compact, implemented by WorldFish Centre, is spearheading efforts to strengthen hatchery systems, improve broodstock management, and promote climate-smart aquaculture technologies. The initiative also focuses on empowering fish farmers, youth, and women with practical skills, while enhancing access to finance and market linkages.
From 7 to 17 April 2026, TAAT will host a Training of Trainers (ToT) Workshop at Robton Farms in Abomey-Calavi Akassato. The program will bring together 34 trainees, including government extension personnel, aquaculture value chain actors, and private hatchery operators.
Participants will receive hands-on training in Tilapia and catfish broodstock management, Hatchery operations and seed production, Fish feed formulation using low-cost ingredients, Water quality monitoring and better management practices, Business planning, marketing strategies, and financial forecasting.
The workshop will also address immediate technical challenges faced by hatchery operators and foster collaboration among institutions, private-sector actors, and TAAT partners.
The workshop will equally strengthen hatchery and broodstock management for tilapia and catfish, expand access to high-quality fish seed and feed, build technical and business capacity among aquaculture value chain actors, promote policies that enable sustainable aquaculture growth, and support women-led aquaculture enterprises and SMEs
TAAT and partners envision a digitally connected network of aquaculture value chain actors equipped with advanced knowledge and practices, Improved productivity and profitability for fish farmers and hatchery operators, and Stronger aquaculture value chains contributing to food security, employment, and rural incomes in Benin
Launched in 2018 by the African Development Bank (AfDB), TAAT is a continent-wide initiative designed to double agricultural productivity by 2030. By scaling proven technologies across crops, livestock, and aquaculture, TAAT seeks to reach 40 million smallholder farmers, generate 120 million metric tons of food, and lift 130 million people out of poverty.
