TAAT and Partners Target Bumper Rice Harvest in Benin

The Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) programme is continuing its efforts to strengthen rice production in Benin through the dissemination of improved agricultural technologies and the direct support of producers on field.
To this end, a joint mission by TAAT and the Sasakawa Africa Association was conducted across several production sites, notably in Agoïta and Tangbedji in the Zogbodomey commune, Koussin and Lélé in the Covè commune, and Tchi-Ahomadégbé in the Lalo commune.
The objective was to ensure the distribution of essential agricultural inputs for the final rice season of the pilot phase and to reinforce the adoption of the technologies promoted by the programme.
Producers thereby benefited from improved rice seeds, notably the Orylux 6 and Faro 67 varieties, as well as inputs such as NPK fertiliser, supergranulated urea, herbicides, and fungicides, in order to optimise the performance of the demonstration plots.
Beyond the provision of inputs, the mission, held on 19 – 20 February 2026, provided an opportunity to engage directly with producers and extension workers to harmonise the nursery planting schedule, set for the period between the end of February and the first week of March 2026.
The producers also expressed their satisfaction with the varieties distributed by the programme, in particular Orylux 6, which is highly appreciated for its aroma and its relatively short production cycle of approximately 100 days.
These characteristics constitute a major asset for improving the productivity and profitability of rice farms, particularly in contexts where producers face challenges, particularly in the sale of their produce.
According to Dr Razack Adeoti, “One of the most encouraging results of this mission lies in the growing interest shown by new producers in the technologies of the TAAT programme.”
Indeed, several farmers have expressed their willingness to adopt the improved varieties promoted by the programme, leading to the identification of new beneficiaries who will receive seeds shortly.
“This progressive uptake by producers constitutes tangible proof of the impact of TAAT’s actions on the ground,” added Dr Razack Adeoti.
By facilitating access to improved seeds, inputs, and good agricultural practices, the programme is making a concrete contribution to strengthening the productivity and competitiveness of the rice sector in Benin, while supporting national efforts to improve food security and reduce reliance on rice imports.
